What is a Health Check or Health Assessment?
- Regular health check-ups can identify any early signs of health issues. So even if you feel healthy, it’s wise to keep up to date with your check-ups.
- Finding problems early means that your chances for effective treatment are increased.
If you have high-risk factors, such as a family history of a condition, it may be more likely that you will develop a particular disease. - Regular checks may help your doctor pick up early warning signs. If you have a high risk of a particular health condition, your doctor may recommend more frequent health checks at an earlier age.
- Having a health check is also a time to examine your lifestyle to see what improvements can be made. This may be something you regularly do yourself or discuss with a healthcare professional.
How often should I have a Health Check?
- General Child Health Check
- General Adult Health Check
- Age 45-49 Health Check*
- Annual Health Check for 75 and older adults*
Your doctor can tell you how often you need health checks. The frequency of health checks depends on your situation, age, family history and medical history. As a parent or guardian, you may want a general health check for your child before entering primary school, eg in kindergarten.
* You may be able to claim Medicare rebate for this service. Please check with Medicare.
What happens after my Health Check?
Your doctor may recommend other tests based on your family history, your medical history or current symptoms. Depending on the results of those tests, your GP may then want to provide a course of treatment, investigate further, make a follow-up appointment or refer you to a specialist for diagnosis and treatment.
Your doctor can also tell you how often you need health checks.

It’s a pivotal moment in life where you have the opportunity to implement lifestyle changes that can improve the quality of your physical and mental health wellbeing. Chronic health conditions can significantly impact your health as you age. That is why a 45-49 year-old health check is important. Your GP can offer recommendations to prevent future health issues.

-
If you identify with any of these risk factors, consult your GP to explore preventive measures.
