Menopause is a normal life event. However many women do experience symptoms that have an effect on their physical and emotional well being.
What is Menopause?
Menopause is diagnosed when there has been no period for 12 months. The average age of menopause in Australia is 51 but it can be earlier. Perimenopause is the time leading up to the period stopping and can start any time from the age of 40 and lasts 5-10 years. During this time the oestrogen’s levels start to change and this can lead to a variety of symptoms.
What are the symptom’s of menopause/perimenopause?
Common symptoms can include but are not limited to
- Mood changes
- unloved feelings
- irritablity
- brain fog
- hot flushes
- muscle and joint pain
- poor sleep
- fatigue
- night sweats
- genital dryness
- loss of libido
Management
Medication is not the only treatment for symptoms. Cognitive behavioural therapy has been shown to reduce hot flushes and a healthy diet with exercise is also important. The good news is that women don’t need to suffer during this time and that there are a number of options available to manage symptoms so if you have any concerns see your GP.
