About Skin Cancers
Australia’s strong sun exposure means we have one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Two out of three Australians will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. There are 3 main types of skin cancers: basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and melanoma.
The good news is that most skin cancers can be successfully treated and cured if detected early. Look for:
- Crusty, non-healing sores
- Small lumps that are red, pale or pearly in colour
- Moles that change in colour, thickness, or shape over weeks to months
If you notice any of these changes, it is important to arrange a skin check promptly.

Skin Cancer Checks
During a skin check, doctors examine the skin closely using a specialised instrument called a dermatoscope. This allows them to assess spots and moles for signs of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. They will also perform a thorough check of the rest of your skin to look for any new or changing lesions. If a mole requires monitoring, clinical photographs will be taken and securely stored in your health record to allow accurate comparison over time.
The skin check includes advice and recommendations for the treatment of any abnormal moles. At Whitehorse Medical Centre, we are experienced in managing and treating abnormal skin lesions, which can be discussed at the end of your skin check. Skin checks are Medicare-rebatable.
